Weekend Newsletter

AssalamuAlaykum fellow GolfPUNKS,

Are you all ready for the next league game? Have you practised your chipping and putting at the Empire? Have you religiously hit those 200 golf balls at the range? Or have you been spending too much time watching Michelle Wie at the Golf Channel?

Whatever the case, prepare to do battle and perform for next week's event, THE IVANTY on Friday 6th July, 0615am at the RBA Golf Course.
Prizes up for grabs are Best Nett Score 1, 2 and 3 which come in the form of our authentic GolfPUNK medals.
Medals are sponsored by Mrs Ivanty Momin, a social golfer, though not an avid one as she's busy minding my children. Yes, she also happens to be my wife.

There will be new players joining next week and so for those who're not familiar with the Rules of Golf, below are some quick points.

1.) Only one mulligan allowed on the first tee-box. Not on other holes. And you have to declare it.(This is the only rule that the committee has changed away from the Rules of Golf)

2.) Please give your scorecards to your markers. Your marker is not your friend in the buggy. Your marker is the other guy on the other buggy. Write down only your player's score and your markers.

3.) What happens when my ball goes OB? - Take a penalty shot. Play where you hit the ball. There's no such thing as taking 2 strokes or 1 stroke where the ball entered the OB.

4.) When your ball decides to go for a swim in the water, take a penalty drop at the point of entry, within 2 club length(red stakes), NOT adjacent to the water. For yellow stakes, take a penalty drop, anywhere behind from the point of entry, on line with the flagstick.

5.) Please do NOT drag your heavy feet when walking on the green as you will destroy the green and spoil everyone's putting. Please walk on the green, don't drag your feet.

6.) As courtesy and to avoid slow play, please bring your putter, wedge or any equipment you need when you go to the green or to your ball. This saves time from walking back and forth to the buggy. Of course, don't rush taking your shot but don't take 10 practise swings either. Other players will start counting and you won't be very popular.

7.) Again as courtesy, please keep quiet when players are putting or hitting their golf balls. Some of them have super-sensitive hearing and might even need earmuffs.

8.) Oh and more importantly, come early before tee-time so we can all start early and finish early and enjoy our lunch and socialising at the clubhouse.

Below are the flight allocation for THE IVANTY next week:

NEWS UPDATE!

Assalamu Alaykum and Greetings GolfPUNKS,

Last week's inaugural B.L.O.G. event was undoubtedly a success. Thank you to all the members and congratulations to Fadzlin Hassan for winning THE OPEN. Of course now everyone's handicap has been adjusted and will be regulated by the League organising committee.

We've had a lot of inquiries from various interested parties and individuals concerning the league. So here are more FAQ's:

Q: Who can join the GolfPUNK league?
A: Anyone who plays golf or can swing a golf club, male or female, Bruneian or not, young and old, yadayadayada, you get my drift.

Q: How much would it cost me?
A: To be a member, the joining fee B$5.oo, to play a league game $2.00.

Q: Which courses do we play and will we go to other courses?
A: League games will be regularly played at RBA Golf Course although other venues are being considered.

Q: What days do you play and what time do you play?
A: Friday mornings 630am or Sunday afternoons 1245pm every fortnight.

Q: What about the green fee?
A: You pay for your own fee via the committee.
Fridays $55 with lunch(if there are more than 15 players),
Sundays $65 no food(if there are more than 20 players).

Q: How does this point system work?
A: TOP 10 gets 10 points reducing to 1. On top of that, every round you play, you're automatically awarded 1 point.

Q: What can i win?
A: Nett score winner gets to win a really cool authentic GOLFPUNK medal that they can keep for the rest of their golfing lives. The Committee is seriously thinking of giving medals to Top 3 players in the league match subject to budget.
There will be a mid-season and end of season ' MINORS' tournament held for league members. Top 10 on the leaderboard will win trophies and other prizes. Whadya reckon the $2 fee is for? It's collection money to buy medals and whatnot.

Q: Who gets to join the mid-season and end of season 'MINORS' tournaments?
A: Good-looking golfers with fancy equipment and cool shades mate. Just kidding.
Only GolfPUNKS who play a minimum of 4 league matches are eligible to join the MINORS.

Q: Can i sponsor your league?
A: We thought you'd never ask. Yes by all means. We take cash, cheque and all major credit cards. Those interested in sponsoring league medals will have the event named after them. How cool is that? Remember the Byron Nelson Classic, well you can have the Awang Si Pulan Classic. Your name will be forever etched in GolfPUNK history. So what are you waiting for? Be a sponsor, Be a GolfPUNK!

I hope the FAQ's have been helpful and we hope to see you on the next GolfPUNK event at:

RBA Golf Club
6 JULY 2007
0615am
Green fee: $55 w/lunch(subject to more than 15 players).

Note to all you GolfPUNKS!

Golf Etiquette
Etiquette is a word that's often heard in relation to golf, more so than with any other sport. But it's not just about manners. It's about not pissing me off on my day off and especially when i'm playing golf because you haven't been to Golf Etiquette 101.

Golf etiquette is an essential part of the game. And it's something that newcomers to the game often learn as they go - on the course, when playing with more experienced golfers. If you are new to the game, or just need to brush up on your golf etiquette, here are some basic rules of the road that will help keep the game enjoyable for you and those around you.

Keep It Safe

• Do not swing your club until you know that others in your group are at a safe distance. Likewise, keep your distance when others are swinging. Be aware to steer clear of trouble.
• When practicing your swing, never swing in the direction of another player. There may be pebbles or twigs or other matter in the grass that could fly up and injure a playing partner. Trust me, i've been hit a couple of times by twigs and soil. It's not nice.
• Do not hit the ball until you are certain that the group ahead of you is out of range. Or else be ready for a war of words and a barrage of abuse.
• If your ball appears headed toward another player or another group, give them a warning by yelling out, "Fore!". In Brunei, golfers yell,"Ball!" which is good enough but please shout it out loud and don't murmur okay. Sound travels slower in air than it does through solids.
• Observe the safety suggestions posted in golf carts and drive carefully. Golf etiquette requires keeping your cart off the grass as much as possible. Not a rule that is adhered much in Bruneian golf courses and i am guilty of it too.
• Never throw clubs in anger. In addition to being rude and childish, it could also be dangerous. Plus anger is not conducive to playing good golf.

Maintain a Good Pace

• Keep the round moving by being prepared to hit your shot when it is your turn. You probably don't like waiting on other groups - don't make other groups wait on you.
• The player who is away hits first in a group. However, in friendly matches (as opposed to tournament play), this rule can be ignored in favor of "ready play" - players hit as they are ready. All players should agree to "ready play" before it is put into effect.
• Do not spend too much time looking for a lost ball, particularly if there is a group behind you ready to play. If you insist on taking the full five minutes allotted to look for lost balls, golf etiquette says wave up the group behind to allow them to play through.
• Always try to keep pace with the group ahead of you. If space opens in front of you, allow a faster group to play through.
• When two players in a cart hit to opposite sides of a hole, drive to first ball and drop off that player with his club, then drive to the second ball. After both players hit, meet up farther down the hole.
• When walking from your cart to your ball, take a couple clubs with you. Taking only one club, then having to return to the cart to retrieve a different club, is a huge time-waster.
• Always leave the putting green as soon as your group has finished putting.

Be Kind to the Course

• Observe cart rules. Some courses will post "cart path only" signs; others will ask you to observe the "90-degree rule." Do as you are told. In Bruneian golf courses, it's like asking smokers to stop smoking.
• Do walk properly on greens so that the spikes of your shoes won't ruin the putting grass.
• Keep carts away from greens and hazards.
• Repair all divots. Yes, i hate it when my ball lands in a divot because i can't hit a proper shot when my ball's in one.
• Repair all ball marks on the green.
• Always rake sand traps after hitting to erase your footprints and damage to the area where your ball was.
• Never take a divot on a practice swing.

And a Few More Golf Etiquette Hints
• Quiet, please! Never talk during another player's swing.
• Do not stand behind another player while he/she is teeing off or setting up a shot or a putt. It is very distracting and golf is a difficult game itself.
• Do not yell out following a shot. Even if boisterous behavior doesn't bother your playing partners, there are other people on the course who may be within earshot.• Be aware of your shadow on the putting green. Don't stand in a place that causes your shadow to be cast across another player or that player's putting line.
• Never walk through a playing partner's putting line. Your footprints might alter the path of a partner's putt. Step over the putting line, or walk around (behind) the partner's ball.

Right, so we've got the knowledge, now let's action it. Play well and have a good golfing day!

What the heck is GOLF PUNK?

Welcome boys and girls to a brand new season of GOLFPUNKS.

This is a league where anyone can join. Most of the players are beginners and novices and so most of you don't have to be embarassed to join hackers and weekend warriors alike. Everyone's gotta start somewhere right?

So you're all wondering, how does this league work. Well here are some FAQ's:

Q: How does the league work?

A: Well, we work the season similar to the Formula One season on a points system. Top 10 players get points.
#1 gets 10pts, #2:9pts, #3:8pts, #4:7pts, #5:6pts, #6:5 pts, #7:4 pts, #8:3pts, #9:2pts, #10:1pts.

Q: Is this thing held regularly?
A: The tournament will be held every 2 weeks, more than likely at RBA Golf Club because it's the easiest and more accessible course to play in.

Q:How much do i have to pay to join? Is it expensive?

A: No mate, it's a cheap league. You pay for your own green fee but every league day, you pay $2 only. The initial entry fee is B$5.00 and that's non-refundable. This'll give you guys an incentive to come regularly for the league.

Q: Hey, wait a tick. I don't have a handicap.

A: It's okay dude, we will ask you for your handicap. Highest being 36 if you're a beginner and if you score gross of 71 regularly, your name must be Seruji. Obviously, golf is a game of gentlemen and honesty is the best policy, if you think you're a 21, say you're a 21. If you think you're a 34, say you're an 34.
Those in the top 3 on the day will have their handicaps reduced from one to three strokes by the committee.

Q: Will there be food and drinks after each round?
A: Not really, B.Y.O.(Bring Your Own) but there will be a mid-season and end of season tournament for all league members. That's what the $2 for you see. You think this league comes from charity?

Q: Do you guys have a ranking and league table then?
A: Oh yea, that's what the league is for. To improve and play the best golf that you can. Rankings and tables give you a competitive edge(eventhough your score might be 114)

(...updated FAQ's 27.06)

We've had a lot of inquiries from various interested parties and individuals concerning the league. So here are more FAQ's:

Just kidding. Mate, all you need is to bring your clubs, your game and $5.00 joining fee.
